History Of Braided Rugs
Braided area rugs are a great choice for any room in your home. They can be found in bedrooms and in kitchens. Large braided rugs can be found in living rooms, dens and great rooms. Because they are easy to wash and can withstand the weather, they are often the rug of choice for use out doors on patios and decks to give guests something soft to walk on.

Braided rugs can be created out of any fabric, which means the color choices are limitless. You can find them in girls and boys rooms and only the colors of the fabric that has been braided together will differ from room to room. But what are braided rugs, how are they created and where did they come from? Here is some information that you might find interesting.
Braided area rugs have been created and used in homes for hundreds of years. In the past, when supplies were limited, people would often take worn-out clothing and other fabric items. They were torn into strips that were then turned into long braids. These braids were coiled like rope and stitched together. You can find

as well as ones that have been made out of cotton or natural fabric. Outdoor braided rugs may be made out of straw or other natural fabrics that wear very well and can stand up to the rigors of weather and sunlight.

Rugs made from braided materials are often round or oval. These can be easy to shape since the coiling process naturally tends to lend itself to an oval or round shape. You can also find these rugs in other shapes including rectangles and squares as well. Remember that they often still have rounded corners even if they are created with straight sides and ends.
You can find rugs that are simple coils of braided fabric or fiber that would look best in a very informal setting such as a family room. If you want one with a slightly more formal feel, look for ones that have a backing or a border rather than ones that are plain and unadorned.
Maintaining these rugs is not difficult. In fact, if it is a small rug that is not bordered or which does not have a backing on it, it is quite easy to simply shake out the dirt and dust. You can sometimes throw a cotton rug into a washing machine and clean it that way although if it is very old and worn out you may want to wash it by hand. You want to make sure that you dry the rug carefully to keep the binding from getting worn out. If you want, you can always dry it flat or hang it to dry rather than putting it in a dryer.
If you notice that the threads which bind the coils of braid together come undone or break, you can simply sew them again. Look for neutral thread that will blend in with the color of the fabric and try and stitch more in the middle of the rug rather than on the surface since this can help keep the stitches in place and keep the fabric from ripping or developing holes.
